There is a family of raccoons living somewhere nearby. I looked out my front door this morning (without my glasses) to see if it had rained and saw a blur in my driveway. I couldn't imagine what it was and squinted up my eyes...it was a raccoon. They are creepy. They slink around and get into your trash cans and growl and fight with other animals. It worries me that the kids play outdoors with these things around. Even though they are supposed to be nocturnal, we see them in the daytime, too.
I read on the internet that they can't stand the smell of ammonia (who can?) and I was worried about them setting up housekeeping under my deck, so I've put out some bowls of ammonia at the deck openings. Don't know if it works though. Guess this is one hazard of living in the woods. We've had more animal (human ones included) issues here than we had in 32 years in town.

They're cute... which bites becuase they're so stinking mean!
They are adorable - what is up with that totally cute mask??!! But absolutely vicious and should never be encouraged. I have heard of people purposefully feeding them dog food... dumb. If you can get reasonably close to it, perhaps you could spray it with a bottle of vinegar & water to discourage them.
I know, they look so harmless!
